Professor lecture on financial statement fraud detection set for Tuesday, Oct. 30

The Rice University Department of Statistics and Center for Computational Finance and Economic Systems (CoFES) welcomes Kuldeep Kumar, professor at the Centre of Data Analytics at Bond University in Queensland, Australia.

Kumar is interested in doing research in computational finance, variable importance analysis, development of hybrid models and combining forecasts using machine learning and statistical models with applications in business and health.

During the 2023 fall semester, Kumar will share his expertise with students and deliver a talk on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm (CDT) in Maxfield Hall, Room 251 on Some Issues in Classification with Applications in Financial Statement Fraud Detection.

Kumar, who is a Fellow and Chartered Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society, has refereed papers for top journals and is an associate editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A), looking after book reviews. He specializes in the application of statistical and machine learning techniques in forensic accounting, fraud detection, bankruptcy prediction, and cancer detection.

Kumar has been the recipient of several awards, including the Commonwealth Scholarship, CEC Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and VC Quality Award for Research Supervision, his paper Using Data Analytics to Distinguish Legitimate and Illegitimate Shell Companies (jointly with Milind Tiwari and Adrian Gepp) won the best paper award from Eurasian Business and Economics Society in 2023.

Kumar has a Ph.D. in time-series analysis from the University of Kent at Canterbury, U.K. He received his M.Sc. in mathematical statistics and B.Sc. in mathematics and statistics from Lucknow University, India.
